Recent Information: Three-Year Duration of Immunity Challenge Studies*
Introduction
Fort Dodge completed a long-term vaccination challenge study to determine if three main canine antigens, canine distemper virus (CDV),canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV-2) and canine parvovirus (CPV),protected for three years. These studies were conducted under strictly controlled laboratory conditions to ensure the best possible evaluation of the product. The dogs in this study were isolated during the entire study period to eliminate any possible outside influences on their response to challenge. Study Design
A group of 40 SPF healthy puppies were used in the study. Vaccinates received two doses of Duramune® Adult; one at six weeks of age and a second dose at nine weeks of age.All dogs were housed in isolation facilities and were under veterinary care for the duration of the study. Controls and vaccinates were housed in separate isolation facilities during the immunization period and until they were challenged to prevent exposure to vaccine virus shedding.
Method:
Number of Dogs Participating
| CDV | CAV-2 | CPV | Total | |
| IM vaccinates | 5 | 3 | 5 | 13 |
| SC vaccinates | 5 | 9 | 5 | 19 |
| Unvaccinated controls | 3 | 2 | 3 | 8 |
| Total | 13 | 14 | 13 | 40 |
| Virus challenge was conducted three years after the
second vaccination was administered. Dogs were evaluated for clinical signs for a period of
time post challenge. Each clinical sign was assigned a score based on its
severity. The results are shown below. *Published in International Journal of Applied Research in Veterinary Medicine,Vol.2,No.4,2004.
Canine distemper virus:
Severe clinical signs include:
- Mucopurulent ocular discharge
- Severe conjunctivitis
- Seizures/convulsions
- Death
Infectious canine hepatitis virus:
Severe clinical signs include:
- Conjunctivitis
- Severe ocular discharge
- Severe nasal discharge
- Abdominal hemorrhages
Canine parvovirus:
Severe clinical signs include:*
- Mucous, watery or bloody stools
- Anorexia
- Lethargy/Depression
- Dehydration
